Legal Fund

Election of representatives takes place in October 2009.

Demographics have changed over the past 40 years. It's time to take back our electric cooperative, give equitable balance to our representatives and uphold the bylaws.

Why We Need A Lawyer

We, the SEC Reform Committee and other members of our electric cooperative, must raise enough money to hire an attorney who will take the case of the member/owners of the Socorro Electric Cooperative into court in order to force the nine (9) trustee majority of the Board of Trustees to adhere to the letter and spirit of the By-Laws of the Coop. The districts must be equalized to assure democratic control by members, reduce wasteful spending, and return the Coop to an organization run by and for its membership.

There are many issues that need to be addressed such as voting by mail, future energy needs, and ways to promote economic growth in the community. Our present board ignores these.

Today the Socorro Electric Cooperative employs and pays for the services of two attorneys; the second hired this past summer in order to defend against a possible investigation into the activities of the Board. It is important to note that these two lawyers are paid with the member's money. The Board has access to the funds of the members of the SEC; the members seeking to reform the Board must raise funds on its own. A good number of people have already contributed to this effort.

To contribute to the SEC Reform Legal Fund, please send a check, money order, etc. made out to Lee Deschamps with "SEC Reform Legal Fund" noted on whatever method of payment you are using. Contact your friends, neighbors, and people that you do business with and ask them to support this effort. All contributions will be confindential. Send whatever amount you can afford knowing that it will save you money in the future.
